Tomorrow afternoon in our HASS lesson we will be having our Aborignal Day celebration. Students have been encouraged to come in some sort of red, black or yellow clothing if they can. This is not a casual day so any item of clothing that is not red, black or yellow needs to be school uniform.

If students prefer they can wear their school uniform and bring something to put on just for the afternoon.

If students do not have anything suitable don’t worry i have streamers and crepe paper that they could make a wrist band or hair tie etc.

Send us your recycling…. well some of it :-)

I have some exciting Team Work Tuesdays planned for next term. For some of these we will need  lots of recycled products.  If you have anything that we could reuse feel free to send it into school. We have a big box ready and waiting outside our classroom to be filled.

  • small to medium boxes from food packaging (cereal boxes, tooth paste etc)
  • paper towel tubes
  • egg cartons
  • plastic cups
  • plastic lids/ bottle tops

Thank you

Krista 🙂

HASS Inquiry and Week 10 celebration Day

Rooms 17. 18 and 19 have been busy in HASS this term. We have working with our fabulous Teacher librarian Simone to  investigate different celebrations and commemorations.

Students made a timeline of their own family celebrations. They then sorted them into celebrations and commemorations.

We then went global! They learnt about one celebration from one country in one continent.  Students were then grouped with others and shared what they had discovered.

Students are discovering that celebrations are based on religion, people and special events. Communities have celebrations because they value something.

So we brought our inquiry back closer to home and looked closely at the celebrations and commemorations we have at Colonel Light Gardens Primary School. Students then had to identify a group of people or thing (e.g. the environment) that they value but currently isn’t being celebrated at CLG through a school celebration event.

The groups were:
*Teachers
*People with needs/disabilities
*Environment
*Reception children
*Aboriginal people
*Parents
*The government/politicians
*Principal
*Animals

Each group had a lesson to develop a presentation to try and convince all other Year 3 students why their celebration idea should be chosen.

They had to answer the following questions:
*Why do they value the group?
*What symbols would represent the group?
*What activities would be held on the celebration day?
*How would you promote the celebration?
*Is it doable and achievable?

After all presentations, students then voted on the celebration that would be held on Wednesday Week 10. Congratulations to the Aboriginal group whose celebration was chosen!

So it is set! This Wednesday, the classes will combine to celebrate Indigenous Australian culture (and such perfect timing for NAIDOC week!). Attached is a poster to explain why we’re celebrating and what we will be doing. The children have taken ownership over the planning, and have shown strong skills in teamwork, setting realistic goals and great time management
